Virginia was born in Park City, Utah and raised by her grandmother Rose Smith and her uncle Sid Smith. She moved to Washington in her early teens to live with her mother and step-father. There she enjoyed horseback riding with her dear friend Gladys Mesplie and flirting with boys with Gloria Jordan. At 18 she joined the Navy and later attended college in San Diego, CA where she met an ex-Marine named Jerry Daffern who became the love of her life. They married in Utah and moved to Denver where they raised a loving family and traveled the world together, making life-long friends in Australia and New Zealand.
