Joseph Lewis Childs, age 81, passed away peacefully October 10, 2016 in Lakewood, CO. Joe was born in Denver to Joseph and Helen Childs. Joe attended high school in Denver and immediately following high school joined the Navy. During the Korean War he was on board the USS Porterfield in the early to mid-50's.

When Joe returned home from the Navy he attended Denver University and obtained his Master's degree in Education. He followed his love for knowledge and wanted to encourage other young minds so he became a teacher. Joe was a...

Joseph Lewis Childs, age 81, passed away peacefully October 10, 2016 in Lakewood, CO. Joe was born in Denver to Joseph and Helen Childs. Joe attended high school in Denver and immediately following high school joined the Navy. During the Korean War he was on board the USS Porterfield in the early to mid-50's.

When Joe returned home from the Navy he attended Denver University and obtained his Master's degree in Education. He followed his love for knowledge and wanted to encourage other young minds so he became a teacher. Joe was a teacher and basketball coach at Cherry Creek High School to 25 years until he retired in 1992.

Joe spent his time doing his favorite pastime- fishing. He was part of the professional walleye fisherman circuit where he travel to many states such as Wyoming, Minnesota, South Dakota and all around the state of Colorado. Joe was a dance instructor in his younger years; he was particularly good at ballroom dancing.

Joe is survived by his two sons Joseph and Rick Childs both of Denver, CO. His loving brother Richard Childs of Denver, CO. His adoring granddaughter Nikki-Lyn Childs of Denver, CO. His adoring sisters the late Ruth & family and the late Janice and family. Graveside service will be held 2:00pm Sunday, November 20, 2016 at Olinger Crown Hill Mortuary and Cemetery, 7777 W. 29th Ave, Wheat Ridge, CO 80033. In lieu of flowers memorial contributions in Joseph's name may be made to American Cancer Fund - Skin Cancer, www.Cancer.org or Dementia Society of America, www.dementiasociety.org
